Deep Coral Sundress

Summertime means sundresses, and I am happy to show my latest one.

Sundress Photos:

Back view:The squares in the back are glass, purchased with a bead kit from A.G. Moore. It took me a long time to find a good match.

Pattern Used:
Butterick 4974

Line Drawing:
Materials:

Fabrics:

High count cotton sateen from stash
Silk charmeuse from stash
Silk organza from stash

Square Links:
The square links I used for the back of the dress came out of a necklace bead kit that I purchased at A.G. Moore in Asheville, NC. I had to buy 3 kits to get the 3 links, but it was worth it because of the great match. A.G. Moore is like Michaels, also a craft store.

Thread: Mettler 100% polyester thread in sewing machine

MaxiLock 100% polyester thread in serger

Machine Needles:
Size 80 Universal

Machines:
Janome 6600 computerized sewing machine

Elna Pro 905 DCX computerized serger

Things I did with this project (that weren't in the pattern instructions):

I made two changes:
1. Silk organza underlining added to beef up the cotton and minimize wrinkling.
2. Center back skirt vent was changed to a lapped vent from the simple vent opening shown for the pattern.

Things I learned, or was reminded of in this project:

As Clotilde says, "Don't be a chicken clipper". I really had to clip the front princess seams much more than I normally would have to get them to lie smoothly. I thought that the combo of cotton sateen and silk organza would be forgiving, but I had to take control of those curves in a big way.

Things I would do differently, were I to make this dress again:
Nothing

Gorgeous, gorgeous! And all that from stash! I just love those rectangular links in the back. You didn't list them under materials, but are they carnelian? They almost look like stone.

Another beautiful, exquisitely crafted, piece!!

Wow, that is beautiful and I love the back detail, whatever you used. I am assuming this one is for you, and it is nice to see you making something for yourself again. A dress like that would make summer a celebration.

Thank you all for the wonderful compliments! I plan on wearing the dress for one of the 4th of July weekend festivities that we will be attending.

Shams, the squares in back are, I think, glass. At least they sound like glass when I clink my rings on them. I bought them as part of a bead kit from A.G. Moore, a store like Michaels, with which I am more familiar. Sorry for not including that tidbit in the original post. I went back and edited it.

Kathryn,

You just continue to make one outstanding garment after another. Your creativity and dramatic garment just astound me! I'll also like to squeeze into that beautiful number!

Very beautiful and wonderful execution as usual. Love the back detail. You always pair the pattern and fabric perfectly too. I see the zipper photo but am still not sure how you get in and out relative to that link back etc?

Anyway, you will be a big hit at your festivity. Do your friends ask you..."Did you make that?" all the time or do they just assume you did? I bet you stun them sometimes when you say Yes. No doubt they think it came from some high end boutique. ;-)
