A New Sport: Weaving
I taught myself a new sport this weekend: weaving on a Hettle Loom. It was great fun. I did some serious stash diving into my yarn collection and came up with some wonderfully rich-colored yarn. It took most of an afternoon to figure out how to set up the warp as perfectly as possible. Then came wefting. I can actually see my learning curve in progress as I look at the beginning of the piece and compare it to the end of the piece.
Here are some photos:

And the final shawl:

Kewl, huh? The shawl is soft as buttah and the colors are wonderful--not quite as neon as shown here. The flash on the camera really amped up the color. Oh, and the shawl is really a perfect rectangle. One side is just folded under a bit more in this photo.
Here's a photo taken without the flash. I think the colors are more true.

The yarns I used are:
Warp: Wendy and Peter Velvet Touch
100% nylon
Weft: Classic Elite Illusion
83% cotton, 14% rayon, 3% polyester
I have enough yarn left for a second shawl, so perhaps I'll get going on that today. It's so much fun to teach one's self something new!

This is absolutely beautiful and so inspiring! I love the colours you chose too.
Learning new things is so important isn't it at all stages of life. Congratulations!
That looks very good!!! I love the colors.
The shawl looks absolutely luscious!
Very beautiful, Katheryn! Is this a "new" hobby or two-off? :) I'm always afraid to start a new hobby because of all the accoutrements and supplies one needs! ;D
Lovely! The colors are simply gorgeous (I like the slightly softer look w/o the flash).
The shawl is beautiful! So when do you start weaving fabrics?! ;)
Wow what a lovely piece of work I bet once you sorted out the setting up process that it was very relaxing.
Oh my - quite gorgeous! I love the colors.
Kathryn, you are the most talented person. I can't believe you taught yourself to weave then just wove this beauty. Gorgeous work for sure!!

Truly dedicated not only to sew but also to weave the fabrics! The results are stunning.
Gorgeous shawl and love the colours.
That's gorgeous. Looks like fun, too. Please put me on your gift list!
Gorgeous! I really like the colors.
Gorgeous Kathryn! Weaving is something that I have wanted to try for a long time. Perhaps when things get settled I shall finally have a chance.
Really lovely Kathryn - I love to see looms and weaving because my grampa was a big weaver and made some absolutely gorgeous things. Real heirlooms (pardon the pun).
