Apronmania
My Christmas sewing continues (see two previous posts for other gifts). This time I made 5 aprons, 4 for my DSD and 1 for my DD.
I made two Christmas aprons for them to wear when they make us our holiday dinner (that's their gift to us each year--DH and I love it!). The motif came from a quilt panel entitled Jingle All the Way, which I found at my local quilt shop. Here's the panel. The color is a bit off because I got the image from a web site:
Here are the aprons. Each apron is lined with a complementary fabric.
Next I made 3 additional aprons for DSD. She had chosen the fabric for these two at Carolina Lily Quilt Shop in Tuscaloosa.
A stylized floral apron with an obi-style belt:
And a cute little work apron (she sells her crafts at local craft fairs and wanted a half apron to store some supplies)
She'll wear it without such a wide obi style to the belt. I just wrapped it around the waist a few times so you could see the apron itself.
And finally, here's my favorite of all the aprons. I got the fabric from www.spoonflower.com last year. It's called "Owl be Darned". I got it in the cotton sateen. My DSD absolutely loves owls, so when I saw the fabric I immediately thought of her.
The instructions for assembly were printed on the fabric, but they were terrible. Plus, there were no seam allowances allowed for in the panel. Each pattern piece was on the single panel, so I just had to cut the pieces out and sew them together. I ended up fully lining the apron with Hang Loose 100% poly anti-static lining. I really love how it turned out.
See the individual tails of the owls, hanging down behind the branch? Each tail was individually lined before sewing to the apron. It's such a clever addition to the apron.
There are a couple of surprises hidden in the print, one of which some of you may already have spotted. There is a cat disguising himself as an owl:
And when the right pocket is pulled open, an otter peeks out:
While it was fun to see these aprons come together, I'm glad to be done with apron sewing for a while. They take more time to make than one would imagine. When I see the girls' happy faces, it will all be worth it.
