Shameless Copying
I'm sort of on a tunic top/skinny pants kick lately so I'm looking to make a few easy to wear tunic tops for Spring. When I saw this Katherine Tilton pattern from Vogue, I immediately liked it, but only in the striped fabric. I figured I'd show a complete lack of imagination and make it in a blue and white stripe, copying the top shown in the pattern. If only I could look like the woman modeling the top, but then that's a whole topic for another day.

I went stash diving and came up with a blue and white striped knit fabric. It is a nubby-textured knit with a hand similar to Slinky, both heavy and drapey.
Here's the result:

The bulge at the top of the sleeve below is from my dressform, not the shoulder pad!

Pattern used: Vogue 8710 View B.

I'm not altogether thrilled with this top. It's the second Vogue sewing project I've made in a week and I guess I figured I was on a roll. I cut out the size Small and didn't even think to check the armhole depth. I had used the size Small (grading to medium for the bust and then back to Small for waist and hips) for the Fuchsia Top I just finished and it fits just fine.

But the armhole depth on this top is about 1 1/4 inch deeper than that for the Fuchsia Top. That, combined with the heavy drapiness of the fabric makes the lower armhole even more obvious to my eye. So what was I to do?

I went old school and made two thin shoulder pads and stitched them in. I think it helps with the armhole depth a bit, but not much. On me, deep armholes scream matron.

I am so disappointed because I love the stripey-ness of this top, with the lines going every which way. I'm going to wear it with navy or white slim pants and see how I like it. If I'm not thrilled with those deep armholes, I'll give it away. A friend has already asked for it, so it can find a home no problem.

Then I'll have to alter the armhole depth on the pattern and go stash diving again to come up with another striped fabric. I have no more blue/white stripe in my collection. Sigh. So much for my shameless copying.

Oh but nice save! I love these creative garments.

Lovely top and the lines really make it very cute. It is frustrating how the different designers use a different block to the regular patterns.

If you don't love this one maybe you should go ahead and gift it to your friend. Then when you make the next one, even if it's not an exact copy, it will be even better because it's an inspired by!

I thought the stripe top on the pattern was great. Sorry you were disappointed in the pattern. It looks nice on the form, for sure. And BTW, you are beautiful and need not be envious of anyone!

Just lovely. I've been eyeing this too. Thank you for pointing out the armhole issue. It may help some of us to reshape them if necessary.
I absolutely love your plaid coat. What a triumph, and fabric for 2.99!!!

It looks nice! I cut this one out before my trip and got it almost finished. I had to do lots of alterations, but I think it will be a TNT when finished. Thanks for sharing yours!

That looks great! I would've shamelessly copied the stripey version, too.

This turned out great - I love it! I love the tunic/skinny pant look. Wish I had the skinny legs to wear it :-(

I love your top. But I can tell from the pattern picture that it would come up really high under the arm. Love those stripes, though.
