Jalie 2919 and 2921 Cardi and Top Set
When I finished the black slinky knit Jalie cardi and top last month, I was so pleased with the results that I quickly slapped those pattern pieces onto some fuchsia knits that I had scored from Nancy's Notions. They then had to queue up behind the rain jacket project until they got their day. They are worth the wait, since fuchsia is one of my fav colors, and the knits are such a nice quality.
Cardigan pleat detail:
Cardi Fabric: Sophia (Poly/rayon/spandex) double knit from Nancy's Notions in the Sangria colorway
Top Fabric: Rayon/lycra knit from Nancy's Notions (sold out) in the Fuchsia colorway
Cardi alterations:
- narrowed the shoulders by 1/2 inch
- inserted 2 fisheye darts in the back for a more fitted look
- shortened the jacket by 3 inches
- shortened the sleeves by 2 inches
Top alterations:
- narrowed the shoulders by 1/2 inch
- shortened the top by 3 inches
- shortened the tie by 5 inches
Sewing notes:
- The shoulder, neck, and armhole (top only) seams are reinforced with clear elastic.
- Because the rayon/lycra for the top was lightweight, I completely self-underlined the top. This gives a really nice weight to the top and allows it to skim over the body, not showing lumps/bumps. I treated both layers of fabric as one in the seaming and hemming.
- For some reason, I kept getting skipped stitches when working on the Sophia knit for the cardi with my Janome 6600, so I switched over to the Bernina 1630, which sewed through it like a dream. I never did figure out why the Janome was acting up, but I was in a hurry and did not want to spend the time to sleuth out the problem. It sewed fine on some knit garments that I altered the next day, and I have sewn many Sophia knit garments on it in the past.
Pattern photos/drawings:
It takes a bit of self-discipline to sew the same patterns a second time within a month, since I like moving on to new things, but it was worth it. I love the way the knits fit and feel. Plus, they go so well with my brand spanking new color-blocked fuchsia/orange/beige heels!

Wow! This is a treat another 2 pieces in the same month...and two pretty awesome pieces at that. I can understand why you've made this combo again...it is stunning! BTW, love the shoes!
Beautiful and elegant, Kathryn. And, WOW, those are killa shoes!!
I ditto what Shams said. And what amazes me is how beautifully both those fabric match. This ensemble is elegant and seems as though it could be worn year round. Now with those shoes, you will be so stylin.'
Karendee
great twinset and love those shoes!!
Love this combo, and those are killer heels.
I love this set - I also need to make up the jalie 2921 in a sleeveless version as I do love this pattern.
As for the shoes - what can I say other than fabulous - girl after my own heart
Gorgeous twin set. I love that color! Oh,those shoes!
Kathryn what a beautiful combination.I am loving your colour choice ! I am interested to learn about the alteration you made to the shoulders. How do you narrow the shoulders ? does this affect the sleeve in any way ?
Beautiful cardigan and top. That top was one of the quickest patterns that I have sewed. The cardigan has been sitting on my sewing station for about 2 weeks now. I lost my mojo trying to work a full bust adjustment with those pleats.
Lisa, I narrow the shoulder seams by 1/2 inch and then taper that amount down to the original armhole seamline at about 3 inches below the shoulder. That small adjustment does not really affect the armhole circumference that much, so I do not make any changes to the sleeve. I make this alteration both for wovens and for knits.
HTH,
Kathryn
What a beautiful coulor!
